:: Who we are ::

Development Information Network (DevNet) is a coalition of over 100 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil organizations that utilize development information. It was formed in 1994, under the auspices of the British Council following a series of consultations with Development workers, Librarians and NGO practitioners in the West African sub region.

Our membership is open to those who have responsibility for information and documentation in the private sector, government agencies, parastatals, non-governmental organizations and international organizations whose activities focus on issues of development.

:: The Vision ::

A dependable and valuable development information resource center, serving the development needs of CSO community in Nigeria and the West African Sub region.

:: The DevNet Mission ::

Our mission is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of Nigerians through efficient management of information and capacity building, with a view to enhancing the effectiveness of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the development process.

:: Slogan ::

"...sharing information for development"

:: Philosophy ::

Our core philosophy derives from the basic premise that development is a human Right.

We have adopted the United Nations definition of development to be "a comprehensive economic, social, cultural and political process, which aims at the constant improvement of the well being of the entire population and of all individuals on the basis of their active, free and meaningful participation in the development and in the fair distribution of benefits resulting there from." It is essential that states cannot be the beneficiaries of development because a state could not by definition be the subject of human rights; instead, emphasis is placed on the individual and collective rights.

In this wise, the UN Declaration on the Right to Development adopted on the 4th December 1986 by resolution 41/128 in Article 1 (i & ii) clearly makes the human person the central subject of development.

Devnet in partnership with individuals, groups and organizations - in a 'global citizens' movement for economic and social justice is therefore poised to pursue the promotion of development policies that places the human person at the core of development.
